New NGO Portal Square ValidatedWhile many international NGO online directories do exist, the ability for international NGOs worldwide to accept online donations through the soon-to-be-launched .NGO Global Directory is a unique service – especially for smaller NGOs from underserved regions. One of the greatest obstacles to global online fundraising has been that there is no international database of validated NGOs upon which donation service providers can build online fundraising tools. GuideStar is a powerful database of validated U.S.-based NGOs that has empowered online fundraising twenty years in the United States, but there is no equivalent on a global scale. The enormous administrative and technical task of validating millions of nonprofits worldwide has thus far prevented the creation of such a database, but in 2015 a new effort to build this long-anticipated database will begin.

Spearheaded by the Public Interest Registry – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain, the new .NGO Global Directory will be launched in conjunction with the release of the new .NGO and .ONG domains. Only legally recognized NGOs, nonprofits, and charities will be able purchase the .NGO domain (approximately $50US) and through the validation process that occurs when purchasing the .NGO domain simultaneously this new database of validated NGOs will be built. In simple terms, if your NGO, nonprofit, or charity purchases a .NGO domain, then you will be automatically be provided a profile in the new .NGO Global Directory. Purchasing a .NGO domain in and of itself is a wise investment, but becoming part of an effort to build the largest international database of validated NGOs not only benefits your NGO, but all NGOs worldwide.

This project has been in the works for many years and the details on how exactly the donation process will work is is not yet known as the new directory is still being built, but an essential first step to being a part of this groundbreaking experiment in global philanthropy is to Express Your Interest in your first choice of the the .NGO and .ONG domains. When the new .NGO domain and directory are launched, you’ll receive notification via email. It’s worth noting that the new domain(s) will be released on a first-come, first-served basis. Until then, below is a draft design of the new profiles (submit your feedback) that will be launched in conjunction with the new .NGO Global Directory.
