Open data is the idea that some data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish.
The Open Data Project seeks to gain a better understanding of how NGOs, NPOs, and charities worldwide use technology for digital marketing and fundraising. Based on the survey responses from the 2021 Global NGO Technology Survey, the 2021 Open Data Project provides benchmarks for how NGOs use website and email communications, online fundraising tools, social media, and productivity and security software.
The survey and the project are available in English, French, and Spanish. To view the data, please take the survey, and once submitted, you will be provided instant access to browse and download the data by region and by country.

How to Use the Data
The anonymized survey data can be easily downloaded into Excel, PowerPoint, a PDF, and/or Word. As open data, it can be used and republished by any person or organization worldwide. Here are some simple suggestions:
- NGOs, NPOs, and charities can use the data to help craft their digital marketing and fundraising strategies.
- Service providers to the nonprofit sector can analyze the data for emerging trends and use the data in their content marketing strategy (blog posts, reports, webinars, etc.).
- Media organizations can use the data in articles and research projects.

Why the Open Data Project?
Most research about digital marketing and fundraising in the nonprofit sector is based on data from wealthy nations and thus often not applicable to charitable organizations worldwide. The Open Data Project was created to address that lack of diversity in data.
Formerly known as the Global NGO Technology Report, the report has been converted into an open data project because the report only featured a small portion of the data. In its new format, all data is provided publicly. Also, multilingual reports are very costly to produce in both time and financial resources. The Open Data Project is basic in design, but significantly more useful to the global NGO sector.
Sponsor the Open Data Project
A limited number of project and language sponsorships are available to companies and organizations that serve the nonprofit sector. The sponsorships are a unique opportunity to reach tens of thousands of nonprofit professionals worldwide.
